What is a Bund watch strap?.
A Bund has a leather pad beneath the watch. Here is what that changes, why you might choose one and what to check for fit.
A leather pad beneath the case
A Bund watch strap has a leather pad between the watch case and your wrist. The pad extends beyond the case, so you see leather around the watch as well as the strap on either side.
On the Asketica examples shown here, the base widens beneath the watch and narrows towards the buckle and the strap tip. Folded leather attachments connect to the watch at its lugs. The base stays beneath the case.
Why choose a Bund?
Choose a Bund if you like the look of a watch sitting on a leather backing. The pad changes the overall size and shape of the watch-and-strap combination. A narrow pad leaves a small border around the case; a wider pad makes the leather a more prominent part of it.
The round watches in these examples are paired with narrow pads. This is one way to wear a Bund without a broad cuff covering much of the wrist.
What changes in fit?
The pad adds a layer beneath the case. If your watch already sits high on your wrist or close beneath a shirt cuff, consider that extra thickness when choosing the design.
Fit involves three separate choices: the attachment must suit the watch, the strap length must suit your wrist, and the pad must have the proportions you want. A correct lug width alone does not settle all three.
